As part of La Boite's Centenary Creative project, A Breathing Tunnel was a collaborative interactive installation, situated on the façade of La Boite’s Roundhouse building in Kelvin Grove. The La Boite Centenary Creative was a project involving 5 creative responses between duos of artists and/or creative practitioners. A Breathing Tunnel was a collaboration between Ruby Stevens and co-creator Mali Glasson Green.
A Breathing Tunnel's creation was a response to archival photographs of La Boite’s unique backstage area at their previous Hale Street location, warmly regarded as “The Tunnel”. This space contained many graffiti activations from La Boite’s cast and crew over the years.
Using tape and a chalk-based paint solution, the artists replicated a selection of the archival graffiti, alongside stylised quotes from important figures in La Boite’s history, directly onto the façade of the building. After the wall was primed with the artists’ design, a toolbox stocked with chalk and tape alongside several blank black cubes created the space. These elements provided a gentle invitation for the public to contribute to the interactive artwork, during 31st July – 18th August 2025.
