Ruby Stevens (they/she) is an artist living and working in Meanjin, Brisbane.
Through a feminist, queer and neurodiverse lens, Stevens’ concept-led practice often utilises irony, exaggeration and juxtaposed gender binaries, inviting a consideration of social hierarchies. Their work is often realised as kinetic sculpture, as well as photographic and video work.
Stevens creates assemblages where purpose isn’t achieved or is not immediately apparent. Utilising the inclination to anthropomorphise kinetic and moving objects, sculptures themselves act as performing bodies. Through failure to achieve purpose, Stevens’ works question if a focus on ‘productive’ output when determining social worth, is detrimental to neurodiverse and disabled individuals. In doing so, Stevens seeks to celebrate alternate ways of working and being.

2026 Nothing matters: a cartoon image of the interior of a bus. One man in a purple sweater with a caption above reading "nothing matters". He looks despaired with bags under his eyes and wrinkles in his brow. He is looking out the left hand window at a gloomy and rough rock-face. The second man wears a bright orangey yellow sweater with a caption above him also reading "nothing matters". He looks jubilant, looking out the right hand window at a sunny, scenic view of rolling green hills and winding creek. He has a seatbelt on and is taking a photo or video with his phone. The road stretches away behind them as they move together up the mountain. QCAD Grey Street Gallery
